Japanese Disaster

3/18/2011

As the crisis in Japan continues, our thoughts are with our Japanese students and their families. We hope for the safety of their loved ones and for a quick resolution to the nuclear reactor situation. Our deepest sympathy for the many lives lost.

Today I had the great opportunity to be in Ms. Bose's Grade 4 class during a Scientists in School visit. From being on the School Advisory Council, I knew that Scientists in School is one of the major programs funded by SAC money. Curious as to what all the buzz was about, I volunteered for one of these visits.

Our session began with a run-down on how "pulley's and gears" work by Andrew, the scientist from SS. Next, the class was set loose to explore this fascinating topic further at five learning stations (manned by himself and some fellow parent volunteers). "That's so cool!" was heard thoughout the morning as students saw how gears and pulleys are used in everyday objects like the can opener, drew neat designs with the help of internal gears (what we called spirograph as kids),  and got the chance to make their own simple machines. I thought it was pretty neat myself and even learned a thing or two!

Thank you to Andrew, Ms. Bose and especially the Grade 4 class for sharing your enthusiasm for learning physics with me. You made my day!
