Introduction to School Council
The School Council is an advisory group mandated by the Ontario Government, under the Education Act, and is composed of an elected committee of parents (executive officers), staff (teacher rep), appointed community members, the principal, and a general membership, which includes all parents of children attending the school. The school council advises the principal and the School Board on a variety of issues and activities relating to student achievement, curriculum goals and priorities, school safety, criteria for selection of new principals, and any other school issues.
Your involvement in school council can range from running for executive officer positions, to assuming the responsibility of the committee chair, to helping out with fundraising events, or to simply attending meetings to listening to what is going on and maybe asking questions or voicing concerns. Many parents have great ideas about what makes a good school, so why not put those ideas to action!
Besides advisory role, the school council also relies heavily on volunteers from the parent group to organize school programs and fundraising activities. Every year, funds raised from events such as the Fun Fair and Pizza Lunches allows us to acquire quality programs (such as Scientists in School and Prologue) and equipment for the students of McKee Public School which would otherwise be not possible.
